Iasi Travel Guide: The Palace of Culture

Address: Piata Stefan cel Mare si Sfant 1
Open: Tue. – Sun 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Palace of Culture – palace of museums, acknowledged as an effigy of the city of Iaşi, was built in neo gothic style, representing one of the last expressions of Romanticism in the official architecture.

The Palace of Culture is distinguished through its magnificent monumentality, admirably valued by the surrounding space, which allows the edifice to freely outline its contours against the background of the Bucium gentle hills. Being a remarkable architectural achievement, the edifice became a true effigy of the old capital of Moldavia.

Today, the 365-room palace houses the Gheorghe Asachi Library and four of the city’s museums: the Moldavian History Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of Art and the Museum of Science and Technology

The Library of the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University

The Iasi Technical University’s Library has been selected among the most beautiful 25 libraries in the world, according to an online survey initiated by the portal.

Today, (the 18th of January 2018) the library is on the first place in the site visitor’s preference top.

Established as a reference and research technical library, it holds about one million volumes archived according to the international cataloguing and indexing practices, covering a widerange of subjects on engineering and technology, science, economics and law.

”This space receives a well-deserved confirmation of the cultural rating and high spirituality which is characteristic of the Academic Palace in Copou”.

Iasi Travel Guide: The National Theatre

The history of the building of the National Theatre of Iaşi – which in 1956 was given the name of Vasile Alecsandri, poet, playwright and theatre promoter – is connected to an unfortunate event: the fire that destroyed the old Theatre on the Hill of Copou on the night of 17/18 February 1888.

Richly decorated in French-eclectic style, the theatre has one of the most splendid auditoriums in the country. It can seat 1,000 people and the acoustics are excellent.

Copou Park and Botanical Gardens

The Copou Park or Copou Gardens is the oldest public park in Iaşi, Romania. Its development started in 1834 under the reign of Mihail Sturdza, making the park one of the first public gardens in Romania and a Iaşi landmark. In its centre lies the Obelisk of Lions (1834), a 13.5 m (44 ft) tall obelisk dedicated to Regulamentul Organic, the first law on political, administrative and juridical organization in the Romanian Principalities.

The current placement of the Botanical Garden, named after the initiator “Anastasie Fătu” in Copou hill, has been established in 1964. The lands extended throughout time, and today, the Botanical Garden in Iași remains the biggest one in the country and one of the biggest ones in Europe.

It is spread on over 100 hectares which include lakes and mineral water springs. The biggest sector, dedicated to the flowers and vegetation of Romania, has a surface of 25 hectares.

Iasi Travel Guide: Churches and Monasteries

The Monastery of the Three Holy Hierarchs, located on Stefan cel Mare boulevard, is a unique monument included on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its embroidery in stone consisting of Georgian, Persian, Arabian, Ottoman and Western elements.

Built in Italian Renaissance style, the St. Paraschiva Metropolitan Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in Romania. The vast interior was painted in 1887 by Gheorghe Tattarescu and the stained glass windows were completed by a Bavarian factory in Munich.

Iasi Travel Guide: Food and drinks

We have selected the best bars and restaurants in town, in order for you to enjoy both traditional food and drinks and also your favourite British dishes.

With a very unique design and a taste of history, La Conac welcomes its guests with freshly made traditional Romanian food and old songs, thus, creating an atmosphere specific to old restaurants.

Located on of Iasi’s oldest streets, Oscar invites you to explore mysterious realms by tasting their specialties from all over the world and, if you are keen on live music, the restaurant delights its customers with live piano music every evening from 7pm.

Are you a vegetarian? Then Cuib is the right place for you and a must see if you are in town. It is a friendly and cosy place where you can eat healthy vegetarian food made mainly from local ingredients.

When travelling abroad it can happen to get homesick. We have great news, though: you can find the familiar even in this part of the world! The Trumpets, the British pub of Iasi located in Palas ensemble, offers their clients the beloved popular dishes and drinks such as “Fish and chips”, “English Breakfast”, “Onion rings, the delicious “Fudge”, but also the famous “Cider”.

For rock, jazz and blues lovers we recommend Beer Zone which has a great selection of Romanian and international beers (almost 200, to be more specific).
